Harlem Renaissance

This guide will help identify and locate resources for high school students studying the Harlem Renaissance.

Background - Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance was a significant social and cultural movement in the 1920s and 1930s. During this time, African Americans migrated from the south to the north and west, many settling in industrial cities like New York City. The result was an explosion of art, music, and literature that reflected the history and experience of African-Americans. The artistic, literary, and musical contributions of the Harlem Renaissance artists continue to serve as an inspiration for today’s artists.
